(CNN) -- The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says the Delta variant of the coronavirus is now a "variant of concern."

That designation is given to the strains of the virus that may be more dangerous.

Scientists believe variants of concern are more transmissible or can cause more severe disease.

Last week, Doctor Anthony Fauci noted that the Delta variant, which was first identified in India, is now in circulation in the U.S. at a rate similar to the tipping point seen in the United Kingdom, where the variant is now dominant.
