Food drive helps hundreds in southern Illinois

MARION, Ill. (WSIL) -- Folks from across the region showed up to a food drive at the Marion Mall Monday.

Organizers say local families still need help getting through the pandemic.

Monday's food drive was unique because the needy could get both human and pet food.

More than 500 pre-packaged boxes of food were handed out, including several pallets of pet food. Organizers said the overall mood was very evident.

"Very thankful, very thankful. This is the second dog food drive we've done. We've done one the week of Christmas and this is the second one obviously. A great response we've had twice as many people this time," said Kelly Norris, the president for Shawnee Preparedness and Response Coalition.

More than 150 people showed up at the last Marion Mall food drive.

Organizers tell News 3 they prepared for more than three times that many people this time around.
