HERRIN, Ill. (WSIL) -- As cases of COVID-19 continue to climb in our area, some local schools are taking steps to go fully remote.

Herrin CUSD #4 Superintendent Dr. Terry Ryker shares with News 3, some of the ups and downs his district has been facing since the start of the school year.

Dr. Ryker said there has been an uptick in the number of facility and staff that have had to quarantine due to COVID-19. He said at the present time they have 16 staff and facility out at their Northside Primary Center and 20 absent at the Herrin Elementary School. Currently, He says, the Junior and high school are fine but Ryker said that could change depending on the fluctuation of those who have come into contact with someone with the virus.

Dr. Terry Ryker, Superintendent, Herrin CUSD #4: Most of them are exposures, there are some of them that have tested positive we had three at Northside recently and four in the last two weeks at Herrin Elementary School and the people that came into contact with before they knew they had the disease are the ones that had to be quarantined.

Ryker says after tracing the cases, they determined the patients contracted the disease from "families or friends outside of school" but some of the cases, were undetermined.
