McCracken County Schools to mandate masks on busses; other districts

(WSIL) -- School districts are taking action as COVID-19 cases surge across the U.S. The McCracken County (Ky.) Public School District released its reopening plan Tuesday that provided guidelines on mask usage.

The plan was finalized before the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention Tuesday it would recommend indoor mask usage for everyone including those vaccinated. The CDC also recommended indoor masks for all teachers, staff, students and visitors to schools, vaccinated or not.

According to the plan, students and staff a MCPS will have the option of wearing masks or face coverings at school and on district property regardless of vaccine status. However, masks will be required on school busses for all students, per CDC guidelines.

Parents are also being asked to screen students before allowing them to leave for school and students and staff must maintain three feet of distancing when possible. Teachers will also keep seating charges to assist with any possible contact tracing or quarantines.

News 3 reached out to the Paducah Public School District and the Cape Girardeau (Mo.) Public School District for inquiries about reopening plans. Representatives from each district say no plan has been released yet.

However, the last line in the plan reads, "MCPS will immediately and appropriately comply with any federal, state or local mandates pertaining to COVID-19."
