METROPOLIS (WSIL) Metropolis' annual 4th of July Fireworks and Hometown Celebration has been canceled amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The event was originally scheduled for July 3.

According to the city of Metropolis, thousands of residents and visitors typically gather on the banks of the Ohio River to enjoy the firework show, and many attend the Hometown Celebration.

“At this time, we simply do not know if large gatherings will be allowed on the 4th of July, so we are erring on the side of caution for the safety of our community, said Mayor Billy McDaniel.

Harrah’s Metropolis Casino and Hotel, the Greater Metropolis Conventions and Visitors Bureau (GMCVB), and the City of Metropolis work together to hold the event each year.

Proceeds are the primary fundraiser for the annual Back to School Supply Drive.

“Canceling was a tough decision to make as the Hometown Celebration is a time for our community to come together and celebrate. Harrah’s Metropolis Casino and Hotel will donate $4,000 to the Back to School Supply Drive, which helps provide school supplies for children in the area, said Chad Lewis, coordinator for the Hometown Celebration.

In addition to the 4th of July Fireworks and Hometown Celebration, the annual Superman Celebration and the ASA Archery Tournament have also been canceled this summer.

Plans are still being made to host the Super City Brew Fest and Homebrew Competition on September 12 and the Fort Massac Encampment on October 17 & 18.
