MURPHYSBORO (WSIL) -- The Murphysboro city council approved an ordinance Thursday evening that makes wearing a mask mandatory where social distancing is not possible.
The special teleconference meeting included contentious debate involving residents and members of the city council. The ordinance passed and includes a warning for the first violation and then a $100 fine for a second violation.
"There's a lot of talk out there like you're going to have to wear it as soon as you walk out the front door, that is not what is in this ordinance," said councilman Mike Bastien.
The mask ordinance defines a face covering as, "a covering that fully covers a person's nose and mask". This can be a cloth face mask, surgical mask, towels, scarves, and bandanas.
Those that have a medical condition and children under the age of two are exempt from wearing a mask.
The mask ordinance will go into effect Sunday.
