Vienna superintendent weighs in on state recognition process

VIENNA (WSIL)---Last month, by the Illinois State Board of Education for not complying with mask mandates.

Tuesday, after the school did not enforce mask mandates.

Losing state recognition means not qualifying for state funding and not allowing students to participate in IHSA and IESA sports.

Because of the consequences, Vienna superintendent Joshua Stafford says due process can take these kinds of decisions months to complete.

One of the first consquences would be a pause on state funding until schools comply with mandates.

"You could see state dollars not be paid to your school district. They get paid in 22 payments throughout the calendar year. There's a possibility that that could be interrupted a little bit quicker," said Stafford.

Despite consequences, Stafford said if school districts comply with mandates set by the Board, recognition is taken off probation and can be fully restored.

"As soon as whatever the issue was would be cleared up, then funding would be reinstated and go right back to those schools," said Stafford.

Most schools have been removed from probation, which Stafford said is important for the bigger picture in education.

"It's a polarizing issue, it's a difficult issue, again, I come back to, I think it's really important, no matter where you fall on that issue, and there are great points, that we keep the main thing the main thing. And that we not be derailed, with all of these things to distract and derail us from the main thing, which is caring about kids and families in our communities," said Stafford.

All schools that were placed on probation in August have been restored to fully recognized status

except North Wayne School District in Wayne County, who is still on probation.
