METROPOLIS (WSIL) -- We're back in the animal shelters this week trying to help homeless pets find their "Furever Homes."

We're introducing you to Herb, a ten year old Coonhound looking for a new family.

"He was found as a stray in Johnson County, Illinois and he was taken into the facility there and held for ten days or more for someone to reclaim him but he was never reclaimed," says Lynn Chrisman, Volunteer at Project Hope Humane Society.

Chrisman says Herb has been at the shelter since February. "He's now been here for several months. Of course during COVID everything kind of slowed down but we're hoping to find him a really good home."

With Herb being an older dog, he does struggle with his hearing. "He's very smart but he doesn't hear you very well. It's just like if I ask him to sit and I get in front of him and show him a treat and ask him to sit then he'll do that for me. The only other thing is with him being a senior he does have a little bit of arthritis issues," says Chrisman.

But Herb doesn't let the arthritis slow him down.

"He's actually pretty energetic for his age. He goes out in our run pen several times a day and he's actually fairly active for his age. He likes to go for walks as you can tell and he likes to eat," adds Chrisman.

Chrisman says Herb would be great with kids and other dogs. "He has a partial sponsorship on his adoption fee so his adoption fee is only 25 dollars and he's been microchipped. We think he's been an inside dog because he's really pretty good about keeping his kennel clean."

The shelter is closed to walk-ins, but you can still make an appointment to meet Herb.

"He'd make somebody a great dog and we sure hope that we can get him placed. We hate to see a senior dog in a shelter for a long period of time," states Chrisman.
