
CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (WSIL) -- Petitions for election shall be signed by not less than 50 registered voters who are residents of the ward for which the candidate is seeking nomination. Petitions for Ward 5 are due November 19th.
At a minimum, Council members attend two public meetings per month to vote on various bills brought forth by staff. An ordinance may also be introduced by any member of the council.
The council also appoints a city manager, clerk, treasurer, and judge. The city attorney is appointed by the city manager with the consent of the council. The council may further reorganize, alter, abolish or discontinue any department, office or agency in city government.
Unless otherwise specified in the ordinance, all departments, offices or agencies established by the council shall be under the direction and supervision of the city manager, and directors of such departments or agencies shall be appointed by and responsible to the city manager.
The council may make investigations into the affairs of the city and the conduct of any city department, office or agency and for this purpose may subpoena witnesses, administer oaths, take testimony and require the production of evidence.
A Special Election to fill the unexpired term for the City Council Ward 5 seat will be held in April of 2025, with a possible Primary Election in February of 2025. The term of this elected seat will run through April of 2028.
