The Better Business Bureau warns consumers to be vigilant against scams as spring arrives.
Warmer weather often coincides with an increase in fraudulent activity.
“Door-to-door scammers come out of hibernation to capitalize on people’s home improvement and repair projects, says Dennis Horton, director of the Rockford Regional Office of the BBB. “There are also phony utility and security imposters who seize new opportunities to trick people. Spring scam losses can devastate your finances, so please be on the lookout.
Homeowners in northern Illinois may need repairs due to wear and tear from winter weather and freeze-thaw cycles.
Additionally, storm damage can create opportunities for unethical contractors to perform substandard repairs.
These individuals may target potential customers through various channels, including phone calls, emails, text messages, online outreach, and even door-to-door solicitations.
According to the Scamtracker Risk Report, home improvement scams ranked fourth on the Better Business Bureau's (BBB) list of scams posing the greatest risk to consumers.
The report further indicates that this scam type was the third riskiest for both the 55-64 and 65+ age groups.
Horton adds, “Drywall, paint jobs, plumbing, roofing, electric, HVAC service, and other home improvement projects all have scam potential.
The BBB offers tips to help consumers make informed decisions when working with service providers in the spring. Here are some key points to consider:
- Sales Tactics: Be cautious of high-pressure sales tactics, upfront fees, and informal agreements.
- Unsolicited Contact: Use extra caution if someone contacts you unexpectedly, especially in person.
- Taking Time: Don't feel pressured to make a decision or sign a contract immediately. Take time to research the company on and other resources.
- Written Agreements: Get a written contract that details the price, materials, and timeline of the project. In Illinois, a written contract is required for projects exceeding $1,000.
- Multiple Estimates: Obtain estimates from multiple companies before making a decision.
- Safety: Never allow unknown individuals into your home. If you have work scheduled inside your home, inform neighbors, family, or friends for safety reasons.
