MARION, Ill. (WSIL)-- City Officials in Marion hosted a ribbon cutting to celebrate the completion of the Tower Square Plaza.
Officials say the original square was laid in 1839 and it is special because it was built during the time the county was plotted and Marion was named as the county seat.Â
The renovation to the plaza includes better parking, American Disability Act upgrades, safety improvements and easier access to businesses around the square.
The City of Marion Communications and Marketing Director Rachel Stroud says they get over 7,000 travelers a day passing through the square.
“We have countless pedestrians and other users on bicycles and skateboards and such. So it was just time for a little improvement to make the square last for generations to come, Stroud said.
She says the finished product of the project is one the community should be proud of.
“So many different professionals played a role in building the square and making it into what it is today. And that just goes to show how many people are going to be able to enjoy it, Stroud said.
Officials say the plaza is decorated with holiday decorations, and the skating rink is being set up for many people to come out and make memories.
“I hope people get out and walk around. It's super pedestrian-friendly now. I walk this square multiple times a day. You're only crossing one lane of traffic at a time. It's great to get out and explore some of these local merchants and eateries to go shopping. And this is the best time of year to do that and to really take advantage of the renovations of the square, Stroud said.
Officials say with the project finished they hope people visit all the different places around the newly renovated square.Â
