PADUCAH (WSIL) The City of Paducah is canceling its annual Easter egg hunt due to concerns about the new coronavirus, known as COVID-19.

The Paducah Parks & Recreation Department's "2020 Easter Eggstravaganza" was originally scheduled for March 30 at Noble Park.

In a , the city says the event typically attracts more than 1,000 people, and the decision to cancel was made out of "an abundance of caution."

“We do not want to do anything that could tend to exacerbate the possibility of spreading the coronavirus in our community. Bringing more than 1,000 of our friends and neighbors together in relatively close quarters for the Easter Eggstravaganza could do just that, stated Parks & Recreation Director Mark Thompson.

The Parks Department had planned to use 15,000 candy-filled eggs for the hunt. Instead, they will offer the eggs for free to schools, churches, and non-profit community organizations for use at their smaller events.

The eggs are available on a first-call, first served basis. Organizations interested in reserving some of the eggs should call the Parks & Recreation Office at (270) 444-8508. Eggs can be reserved in batches of 250 up to a maximum of 1000 per organization.

Parks & Recreation staff will then arrange a day and time for organizations to pick up their reserved bags of eggs.
