SENATH, Mo. -- A 25-year-old now faces 15 felony charges, including kidnapping and assault, in a hostage investigation in southeast Missouri. Six of the charges were added recently after the suspect was originally charged with nine earlier in the week.
Police were called to a hostage incident on Monday at around 4:20 p.m. at a home in Senath.
The Dunklin County Sheriff's Office first told News 3 a suspect barricaded themselves in a home with two hostages inside. Police then surrounded the home and talked with the suspect in an effort for a peaceful resolution.
Police later said the suspect inside was Kenneth Canday, 25 of Kennett. Police also said there were two female hostages inside with him and that Canday was considered armed and dangerous. They also said a sword and knives were present inside the home.
Hours later, the Dunklin County Sheriff's Office told News 3 at 8:43 p.m., one of the hostages was freed. Police continued to negotiate with the suspect for several more hours into the night.
Just before midnight, News 3 learned the alleged hostage incident was over and Canday was taken into custody. Police said both of the female hostages were okay.
The incident happened along Church Lane in Senath.
Canday was taken to the Dunklin County Jail where he first faced two counts of first-degree assault, four counts of armed criminal action, first-degree robbery, first degree kidnapping and third-degree assault charges.
On Thursday, February 1, online court records stated there were six additional charges added against Canday. He also now faces two additional armed criminal action charges (six total), two additional kidnapping charges (three total), an unlawful use of a weapon charge and a resisting/interfering with arrest for a felony charge.
