CARBONDALE, Ill. (WSIL) -- A Carbondale man was arrested after police said he had a gun with a defaced serial number while trespassing through a park.

The Carbondale Police Department said on April 15, at 1:57 a.m., officers found Milik Hughes, 29 of Carbondale, who was trespassing in a public park in the area of the 1200-block of West Pleasant Hill Road.

Police then arrested for Hughes trespassing, police said.

When officers were arresting Hughes, they said he had a loaded gun on him with a defaced serial number and cannabis which police said was in violation of Possession Adult Use of Cannabis Act.

Hughes was taken to the Jackson County Jail and was cited with Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Defacing Identification Markings on a Firearm, along with a cannabis charge.

The investigation is active and ongoing.
