46-year-old faces arson, domestic battery charges in Herrin

HERRIN, Ill. (WSIL) -- A 46-year-old man faces multiple charges after he is accused of domestic battery and arson in Herrin.

According to the Herrin Police Department, the incident took place on November 14, at 6:40 a.m. in the 600 block of N. 6th Street.

Police said officers found a female victim near the address after they responded to the scene for a disturbance report.

An officer at the scene reported they noticed there were injuries on the female's body and face, which police said was consistent to being physically struck. Police also said the victim told them she was hit by her boyfriend and she then left the apartment they were in afterwards.

Police started investigating. Officers then went up to the apartment and found a suspect they identified as Doniel McKenzie. When they were placing McKenzie in handcuffs, officers said they saw smoke an flames coming from inside the apartment.

Officers then searched for anyone else in the apartment and then cleared out other people from the surrounding apartment units.

The Herrin Fire Department then showed up to extinguish the flames. The Herrin Police Department and the Illinois State Fire Marshall were on scene as well.

Police said the fire was intentionally set.

According to the Williamson County Sheriff's Office's mobile app, Doneil McKenzie is being held on charges of Obstructing an Officer, Aggravated Arson, Criminal Damage to Property, Aggravated Domestic Battery, Domestic Battery and Possession of Meth <5 grams.
