Unsung Hero: Retired substitute teacher Donna Pugh goes above and beyond

  • 0

MURPHYSBORO, IL (WSIL) -- In this edition of Unsung Hero, a retired Murphysboro teacher is still teaching as a beloved substitute.

Donna Pugh retired from Carruthers Elementary School in 2014 after a 38-year teaching career. That same year, she became a substitute, and she's been subbing ever since. She's also a substitute teacher in demand.

This year is just like old times. She has been in charge of a 5th-grade class since school started, August 17. She is subbing for a teacher who transferred to the middle school to teach math. Donna said she plans to stay with the 22 students until they find her replacement or until her allotted 120 days are up.

"I hope that they have as good of a time as I do in the classroom. I {absolutely} love coming to school every single day, and I hope some of that rubs off on them and that they will enjoy their experience having me here," explained Donna.

Donna said, as a substitute, you're only as good as the teachers you work for, and she's been blessed to work with amazing teachers at Carruthers.

"I would not have been able to do the beginning of this year without the amazing 5th-grade team that Carruthers has. They have shared everything with me."
