Firefighters respond to two fires within 24-hours in Murphysboro

MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (WSIL) � Two fires are under investigation in Murphysboro after crews responded to both within a 24-hour span.

The Murphysboro Fire Department said they first responded to a fire at a high-rise apartment complex on Tuesday afternoon during which time thunderstorms rolled through the area.

Firefighters said the fire took place on North 13th Street and the blaze was contained to one apartment unit.

On Wednesday morning, fire crews again responded to a fire; this one being a fully involved house fire on Hortense Street at 3:45 a.m.

Multiple area fire crews from the Carbondale Fire Department, Murphysboro-Pomona-Somerset Fire Protection District and the Jackson County Ambulance Service helped to assist at the scene.

Photos of the house fire show flames coming out of the roof and west side of the home, causing extensive damage to the structure.

The Murphysboro Fire Department said both fires are under investigation.
