CARBONDALE (WSIL)--There are many people who rely on government assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially those who cannot work in the public due to other health conditions.
Wilbur "Wil" Davis worked at Longbranch Cafe and Bakery for nearly 30 years before having to limit his interactions with people, after being diagnosed with cancer.
Davis has been living off $200 a week, but is unable to receive government assistance.
After hearing this, his niece created a GoFundMe, and the community rallied.
"I'll tell you what, it saved my life. Because, you know, people started giving, which I'm so grateful for. And it started paying my bills, my rent, my car payment, because 200 dollars a week is one bill. So it's been pretty tough. Something to adapt to," said Davis.
