SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale received a big donation today from the Carbondale Auxiliary.

CARBONDALE, Ill. (WSIL)-- SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale received a big donation today from the Carbondale Auxiliary.

The group donated $50,000 to the SIH Brain and Spine Institute.

A neurologist with SIH, Jonatan Hornik says the money will help buy medical equipment to perform non-invasive ultrasound tests.

“So far without stuff like this that allows us to look at the early development of the complications, Hornik says. “Before this, we were needing to transfer people to larger academic centers outside of the state. This way we can keep patients near their communities.

Hornik says the device allows doctors to perform non-invasive tests at a patient's bedside or in the clinic.

One volunteer Anna Mary Rushing says they try to help out wherever they can.

“We helped in a lot of places, Rushing says. “Like we've done the chapel the ER. We've done the first defibrillator years ago.

Rushing says a large portion of the funds comes from the hospital's gift shop that she works in.Â
