Pope County officials and volunteers to fill sandbags as Ohio River rises

GOLCONDA, Ill. (WSIL) -- Authorities in Pope County will be filling sandbags on Monday to help keep floodwaters from the Ohio River away from homes and businesses. They also ask residents to help.

The Pope County Rural Fire Protection District said they will start filling sandbags behind the ambulance base off of Eddyville Blacktop starting at 7:30 a.m. on April 7.

Members from Pope county fire, Pope county ems and Pope county EMA will be helping to fill the sandbags and ask volunteers to bring a shovel if they have one.

The Ohio River at Golconda is expected to crest at 52.7 feet (Moderate flooding) on April 15. 

Fire official said they have 25,000 bags available to fill with possibly 10,000 more along the way.
