Rockford Police K-9 Officer Shot and Killed, Suspected Gunman Hospitalized

ROCKFORD � A Police K-9 Officer with the Rockford Police Department was shot and killed Sunday, in the line of duty.

According to a department spokesperson, officers were responding to a call on Jacqueline Drive, near Sandy Hollow Golf Course.

Their investigation quickly developed and expanded to search for suspect in the case, who was located along the 2900 Block of 11th Street in south Rockford.

When officers approached the suspect, gunfire was exchanged between police and the suspect.

During the exchange, a police K-9 officer was shot and killed.

The department has not released the name of the dog as of Sunday evening.

The suspect sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg and is being treated at a local hospital. 

Following the incident, Rockford Police Chief Carla Redd immediately contacted the Winnebago Boone County Integrity Task Force, who will now lead the investigation.

Any further response will be from the Task Force or the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office.
