MAYFIELD, Ky. -- A second church within a four-day time period was awarded nearly $5 million in recovery funds from FEMA, more than two years after an EF-4 tornado destroyed much of Mayfield.

FEMA stated the Mayfield First Methodist Church was approved for $4,838,775 in federal funding after damage caused by the December 10, 2021 tornado which wiped out the entire Downtown Mayfield area, along with nearby neighborhoods.

The church was destroyed by the tornado which was originally built in 1919, making it a 102-year-old building at the time of its destruction.

According to a FEMA news release, contractors are scheduled to start the rebuilding process. The approved funds will help with roofing, interior services, foundation, columns, mechanical systems, furnishing and more.

Funding for this project was approved under the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act.

Late last week, the First Christian Church of Mayfield received $4,757,382 in FEMA Recovery Funding as well.
