CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (WSIL) -- One person is dead after a house fire in Cape Girardeau on Thursday night.
The Cape Girardeau Fire Department said firefighters responded to a house fire in the 1400-block of William Street at 10:20 p.m. on January 30, with reports of people trapped inside.
The home was reported with heavy fire conditions on the second floor. Firefighters said they found an adult on the second floor, however, they did not survive.
A family pet was also found deceased.
The cause of the fire was due to an unattended cooking fire, according to the State Fire Marshal.
A total of 35 firefighters responded to the scene and were able to get the fire put out.
Assisting Cape Girardeau firefighters were fire crews from Scott City, Jackson, Gordonville, Fruitland, Benton, Millersville and Chaffee.
The fire is under investigation by the Cape Girardeau Fire Department, Cape Girardeau Police Department and the State Fire Marshal's Office.
