WSIL(Carterville, Ill.) -- This morning, we are tracking wise spread light to moderate snow that is moving into the region from west to east. The entire region is under a Winter Storm Warning in effect until midnight.

Hourly Forecast

For today, snow will persist through the entire day. Snow will continue to be light to moderate through 7, with the heaviest bands of snow expected to enter the region  between 8AM-10AM. Moderate to heavy snow will continue  through the early afternoon hours. This is when most of our accumulations will occur. Snow will gradually become lighter, and coverage will become more scattered to isolated through the evening. We should be done with snow after 8 or 9 this evening, but we can't entirely rule out a couple of isolated snow showers through the overnight hours through early tomorrow morning.

In terms of accumulations, we are tracking totals that will be on average around 4 to 6 inches, with lighter totals expected further north. Locally higher totals are certainly possible across  southern Illinois, but over 6 inches of snow is more likely across our far southern counties in the Bootheel and northwestern Tennessee. There is the potential for power outages with this winter storm, manly due to the lingering ice.  However, the risk is lower with this system as winds will be mostly calm.

Temperatures today will be in the lower 30s, around the freezing mark, for afternoon highs. Highs tomorrow will be similar, but we are expected to see temperatures above freezing  for Sunday. But more arctic air is possible for early next week.Â
