SPRINGFIELD, Ill.- House lawmakers passed Sunday that could finally reduce trailer fees.
Members hoped to bring the current $118 fee back down to $18. However, Democrats and Republicans had to reach a compromise.
"I think this is long, long overdue as a correction," said Rep. Avery Bourne (R-Morrisonville). "I wish it was down to $18, but we can't get everything we want in this building. This shows that we can sometimes find an agreement even if it's not perfect."
Senate Bill 58 would reduce the license place renewal fee for small trailers to $36 per year.
Part of the compromise included raising the certificate title fee by $5, from $150 to $155. The certificate title fee is only paid when titles are transferred for registered vehicles.
This plan received bipartisan support as many lawmakers said it was one of the top three issues when constituents call for help.
According to Representative Paul Jacobs, there have been as many as 150,000 fewer trailer renewals since the fee increase took place.
“There were a number of bills to lower the license plate fees on small trailers but eventually the compromise was to lower the fees to $36 per year, Jacobs said. “I would have preferred reducing the license plate charge to a one-time fee but at least we were able to get the cost lowered. This is something I hear a lot about from constituents and I am pleased we were able to get this bipartisan compromise done before we adjourned.
Rep. Paul Jacobs (R-Pomona)
The bill passed unanimously out of the House and will now return to the Senate for concurrence.
