GALLATIN COUNTY, Ill. -- Gallatin County Clerk Deanna Bryant posted an alert of a new scam that is targeting residents around the area on Thursday morning.

Gallatin County Scam

According to Bryant, property owners throughout the county have received letters with instructions to buy a copy of the owned land's deed. Bryant said to disregard these letters should you receive one.

Bryant warned the letters look official and feature information that, while public, seems personal. This includes the owner's name, the property's address, a tax property I.D. number and assessment data. The letter asks the recipient for between $107.25 and $121.50.

"If you ever need a copy or a certified copy, we at your County Recorder's Office will always have it for you in most instances at no cost to the property owner," wrote Bryant.

Bryant also noted the elderly tends to become the main target of the scam.

Deeds in Gallatin County since 1814 are available on the Gallatin County website thanks to the County Recorder's Office. All questions should be directed to the Gallatin County office at 618-269-3025.
