I-57 shut down in both directions near West Frankfort

I-57 semi crash

WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. -- I-57 has shut down in both directions due to a hazmat spill. 

ISP says a semi truck flipped over, spilling an unknown, flammable gas. This occurred around mile-marker 68. ISP says the crash occurred at about 4:56 a.m. at the Yellow Banks Road Overpass between West Frankfort and Benton.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office says drivers should divert off at the West Frankfort and Benton exits. Yellowbanks Road has also closed over I-57.

We are hearing an extrication will be required but can not confirm at this time.

Traffic is shut down in both directions. 

ISP and the West Frankfort Fire Department are on the scene. The Franklin County Emergency Management Agency is on the scene with a drone. 

The Franklin County Sheriff says the closure should reopen around 10 a.m. -noon.
