MARION, Ill. -- The Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois remembered the fallen soldiers of the Korean War on the anniversary of its end Saturday morning.

The group posted to honor the day. The war reached its armistice on July 27, 1953. Since then, it has become known as the "Forgotten War." However, the Honor Flight points out that 36,000 Americans lost their life during the war.

The post pointed out the intense battles and conditions soldiers faced during the battles of the war.

"At the Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois, we are privileged to accompany Korean War veterans to the memorials built in their honor," read the post. "Today, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all Korean War veterans. Your courage and sacrifice continue to inspire us."

The flight takes veterans to Washington D.C. each year to receive honors for their time fighting for the U.S. One of the spots the flight groups visit is a memorial for the Korean War that highlights 19 steel statues depicting a squad on patrol during the Korean War.

"Thank you for your service," said the Veterans Honor Flight page. "Let us never forget."

News 3 gives a special shoutout to veterans of the Korean War today and remembers all who gave their lives for our freedom.
