HARRISBURG, Ill. -- The Shawnee National Forest has said it still has camping spots open for Monday's total solar eclipse.聽
With over one million out-of-town visitors expected to come to the region to view this historic event, many hotels have already reached capacity. The Shawnee National Forest, however, has quite a number of spots available.聽
The forest posted on 聽Wednesday to inform visitors of availability in the forest. The post continues to be updated every few hours.聽
Below are some of the campgrounds that still had availability as of 12:15 p.m. CST on Thursday. Please note, these numbers could quickly become outdated. It is best to check the forest's or for the most updated information.
- Bell Smith Springs Redbud Campground (operated by concessionaire)--聽15 of 21 non-electric sites available (4/4/24)
- Garden of the Gods/Pharaoh Campground -- 3 of 12 non-electric sites available (4/3/24)
- Pounds Hollow/Pine Ridge Campground -- 5 of 13 electric sites available and 41 of 41 non-electric available (4/3/24)
- Turkey Bayou Campground (maintained by Friends of Turkey Bayou) -- 14 of 19 non-electric sites available (4/3/24)
