CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The McLeod Summer Playhouse returns to its roots for the finale of its 2024 Summer Season with a performance of "Hello Dolly!"
The Tony-Award-winning musical follows Dolly Gallagher Levi as she chases an unmarried rich man, Horace Vandergelder. The show has a special place in the McLeod's history as it was featured in the theater's first season.Ìý
SIU's Assistant Professor of Practice at the School of Music Angela Shultz will embody the show's titular character.Ìý
“Besides playing an iconic role in musical theater, I relate to Dolly,â€ Shultz said. “She easily sees how she can make things better for others, but it often leaves her needs unmet. It’s the plight of teachers, caregivers, parents.â€Ì
Shultz's career expands far beyond SIU; she even has acting credits in New York City. However, Shultz says "Hello Dolly!" is one of the longest roles she's had to prepare for.
“It’s enormously challenging and thrilling,â€ Shultz said. “Without a doubt, my favorite part has been sharing this process with professionals and connecting with that part of myself again. Even more so, sharing the stage with my students is a singular experience. I’ve loved watching their knowledge and passion thrive and grow, and it’s added a nuance to our work together.â€Ì
The show marks the 100th project for Director Bill Kincaid. Kincaid graduated from the school's Master of Fine Arts program and spent time teaching for the Salukis as well. He has gone on to direct in nine states but is excited to celebrate this milestone at SIU.Ìý
“It feels fitting that my 100th show is back on the McLeod stage,â€ said Kincaid. “It seemed fitting to start [my 60s] doing something I love so much and doing it in a location that has been such a big part of my life. I have a long history here and lots of great memories.â€Ìý
The full cast features 22 actors, many returning to the McLeod stage.Ìý
