WSIL(Carterville, Ill)-- This morning most of us are waking up to temperatures in the low 70s with partly cloudy skies.Â
As we go through the day, we will see temperatures warm into the mid 90s for afternoon highs with heat index values likely topping 105 later on this afternoon. For most of us, there is a heat advisory in place from 11AM today through 8PM this evening for heat index values that could be as high as 109 this afternoon.Â
For the Bootheel of Missouri and northwestern Tennessee, there is an Excessive Heat Warning in place from 10AM today through 8PM. This is for heat index values that could be as high as 112.Â
In addition to the heat, we are also tracking the potential for a few strong to severe thunderstorms. Most of us will remain dry through the morning hours, through a few light isolated showers are possible.Â
Once we get into the afternoon, mainly after 2PM, we will see isolated storms develop in our western counties, and track eastward. Storms will become more scattered by 4PM and more wide spread by 6PM. The main hazards with any strong to severe storms will be damaging winds and small hail. The best window for severe storms will be this afternoon and evening.Â
Showers and storms will last overnight tonight into tomorrow morning. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected for the start of the July 4th Holiday, and should linger through the morning hours.Â
We will see some dry time in the early afternoon, which will help us warm into the upper 80s and lower 90. Triple heat index values are certainly possible tomorrow but it will be dependent on how much sun we see.Â
Late in the afternoon and evening, we will see more storms form in our westernmost counties and track east, similar to what we will see today. There is also a level 2 risk of severe weather for tomorrow afternoon. Rain and storms will last through much of the morning hours Friday, before drying out for the weekend.Â
Given all of the chances for storms, there is some potential for flash flooding. We could see 2-3 inches of rain with locally higher amounts.Â
