Williamson County deputies arrest armed robbery suspect after 5-hour manhunt

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, IL (WSIL) -- Deputies with the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) went out to the 9800 block of Crenshaw Road at 10:35 a.m. on Monday to serve an order of protection for Eric F. Gibbs.

Shortly later at 11:15 a.m., deputies found out about a disturbance with shots fired that happened there at the same address.

Once deputies got back there, they found out Gibbs came back to the home in violation of the order of protection and then fired a gun which hit a vehicle and threatened multiple residents, WCSO said.

Woods then ran into some woods nearby. This started a five-hour manhunt, the sheriff’s office said. This was in the area from Crenshaw to just north of the Pavilion.

Around 3:30 p.m., they received a tip which led deputies to go to Skyline Drive where they found Gibbs.

As deputies approached him, he then ran west across Skyline Drive and back into the woods.

While pursuing him, the WCSO said Gibbs tossed a black bag with methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. This was later recovered by authorities.

A K9 also pursued Gibbs and found him hiding in some brush.

Gibbs still refused to surrender, so they deployed the K9 on him and Gibbs then surrendered.

Gibbs was taken into custody and taken to the hospital for minor injuries he got when running through the rough terrain.

Gibbs was then taken to the Williamson County Jail.

Deputies also found a gun from a strip pit found miles away from the original scene.

Gibbs faces charges of violation of order of protection, armed robbery, interference with the reporting of domestic violence, aggravated use of a weapon, aggravated assault, reckless discharge of a firearm, possession of drug paraphernalia, methamphetamine and resisting/obstructing a peace officer.
