FRANKLIN COUNTY, ILLINOIS (WSIL) � The Old King Coal Festival is returning to West Frankfort after having to be canceled last year due to COVID-19. This year, will mark 80 years since the town first held the festival in 1941.
Larry Morris worked 43 years in coal mining and says he remembers that day well and was close to some of the victims.
The monument remembers those who passed away in an explosion on December 21st, 1951; that explosion happened during the last shift of the Orient Number 2 Mine before the Christmas holiday.
