MARION (WSIL)– The curtain will come up on the 2019 Frontier League regular season Friday night for the Southern Illinois Miners. The Miners had their final preseason tuneup Tuesday morning, as they welcomed Evansville to Rent One Park.

Already up 2-1 in the fifth inning, Miners catcher Andy Cosgrove extended the lead with a two-run homerun to left center to make it 4-1. Miners would add another run in the fifth, Joe Duncan coming home on a wild pitch to make it 5-1.

Then in the sixth inning, Miners using Chris Iriart as an extra hitter on the day, he would get a two-run homerun to extend the Miners lead to 7-1.

"We’ve won seven games through the course of the last week, we’ve played really good baseball. We’ve had some good pitching, we’ve had some tough decisions to make, and we still have a few more, but we like where we’re at right now. We have a lot of experience playing on the field, and we’ve hit the ball really well, and we’ve pitched it well. You know, those are pretty good combinations. Now it starts for real on Friday night, and we need to bring it then, but we like what we’ve seen a lot so far," said Miners manager Mike Pinto.

The Miners will open their season against the Otters in Evansville Friday night.
