CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- On Monday, the NCAA Division one council recommended that an athlete's amateur status be removed when it comes to making money from their name, image and likeness.
Numerous states that have passed laws related to Name Image and Likeness, and schools in those states under the NCAA's proposed plan would be responsible for determing whether athletes Name Image and Likeness activities are consistent with those state laws.
Illinois is currently not one of those states but it could change by the fall.
Recently we caught up with SIU Athletic Director Liz Jarnigan and asked her what would it mean if athlete's are able to benefit financially from their name, image and likeness.
Jarnigan provided some insight as to how it could impact her campus.
"You start talking about that pay for play concept and then I get concerned about what we are doing," Jarnigan said. "We are here to represent our school, the Salukis are here to represent the academic institution of Southern Illinois University and all the great programs that are here and to turn the model into more a professional model, I think does an injustice to the purpose of Southern Illinois University and that is to provide an education to students."
