MT. VERNON (WSIL) -- The Jefferson County Health Department has announced 42 new cases of COVID-19 in the county.
In a release Wednesday morning, the department identified 42 new COVID-19 cases. 38 of those cases are long term care residents at GreenTree at Mount Vernon. The facility is working with the state and both local hospitals to ensure all proper precautions are being taken to prevent further spread.
GreenTree at Mount Vernon was the assisted living facility experiencing an outbreak of COVID-19 on April 19.
"How it started there, nobody really knows," questioned Lewis. "Did it happen before they locked it down by a grandchild visiting their grandparents? Was it brought in by a healthcare worker? We don't know the gestation period for the virus. There's no concise census in the medical community."

Additionally, a woman in her 40s has tested positive and is being isolated at home and another is a teenage female who is also in isolation at her home. There is also an additional male in his 60s in home isolation and male in his 70s who is being isolated at a local hospital.
To date, there have been 76 lab-confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 in the county, two of them resulting in death. Six of the positive cases have been released from isolation.
