WILLIAMSON COUNTY (WSIL) -- The Bi-County Health Department will now provide COVID-19 booster shots to those who are immunocompromised.
On August 12, the FDA modified the emergency use authorizations for Pfizer-BionTech vaccine and the Moderna vaccine to allow for administration of an additional dose for certain immunocompromised people (i.e. people who have undergone solid organ transplants or those diagnosed with conditions that are considered to have an equivalent level of immunocompromise.)
The additional dose should be administered at least 28 days after the completion of the initial vaccine doses.
The use of an additional dose of a COVID-19 vaccine apply only to people who are moderately or severely immunocompromised.
Currently, CDC is recommending that moderately to severely immunocompromised people receive an additional dose. This includes people who have:
- Been receiving active cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood
- Received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
- Received a stem cell transplant within the last 2 years or are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
- Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (such as DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome)
- Advanced or untreated HIV infection
- Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that may suppress your immune response
People should talk to their healthcare provider about their medical condition, and whether getting an additional dose is appropriate for them.
Vaccinations are for those 12 years of age and older. Those 12-17 years old MUST have a parent/ legal
guardian present at time of vaccination.
- If you received MODERNA, please make sure it has been at least 28 days AFTER your first dose.
