(WSIL) -- The Illinois for the November 3rd election Friday. That plan now heads to Governor JB Pritzker's desk for approval.
Senate Bill 1863 will allow people to vote in November without going out in public, protecting them from COVID-19. But local lawmakers like Representative Patrick Windhorst (R-Metropolis) say it's not a good idea.
"I think it's actually going to put a lot of burdens on our county clerks who will be responsible for implementing the program," he said.
Union County Clerk Lance Meisenheimer is worried about the additional costs for applications.
"I've yet to hear…who's going to be paying for all of this? So that's a big concern I do have 'cause I don't have that kind of money in my budget at this point," he said.
Meisenheimer's also concerned about the amount of overtime county clerks would have to put in.
"They're extending the hours to for us to stay open until 7 o'clock during early voting…that would require me to have front door security and keeping staff for an extra three hours every day. There again, I don't have--I didn't budget that," he said.
Lawmakers like Representative Terri Bryant (R-Murphysboro) agree stating: “I am especially worried that voter fraud will increase exponentially because of this program. I also believe that our county clerks will be faced with significant costs and increases in the manpower that will be required because of certain provisions in the bill.�
But the biggest concern for News 3 viewers is voter fraud.
