MARION (WSIL)--The Marion VA will begin distributing the Janssen vaccine starting on March 10th.
The Janssen vaccine is more commonly known as the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
Johnson & Johnson is the parent company of Janssen.
The Janssen vaccine is different than the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, because it only needs one dose to be effective.
This vaccine will give a third vaccination option to veterans in the Marion VA Healthcare system.
The Janssen vaccine is 66% effective against moderate COVID-19 for 28 days after the initial vaccination and is 85% effective against severe to critical COVID-19 in that same timeframe.
Officials at the VA hope this additional vaccine will help get more veterans vaccinated faster.
"We hope with the expanded arrival of the new vaccine, we'll be able to increase our vaccination efforts and we're going to start hosting a series of pop up vaccination events in our rural communities to reduce the need for veterans to come on to the main campus," said Public Affairs Officer of the Marion VA Healthcare System, Todd Wright.
So far, the Marion VA healthcare system has given first doses to 5,000 individuals.
The Marion VA will be starting their pop up vaccination clinics this Saturday in Paducah, but they are operating on an appointment only basis at this time.
