CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- A professor from the School of Computing at SIU is working on a Virus Contact Map.

The new tool would track COVID-19 cases to help inform the general public and health officials.

It would only include information about when the person was exposed and the where the exposure was located.

Professor Koushik Sinha says the map would be key for virus research.

"So which of the places that have been visited by them in the recent past and maybe based upon the risk that we kind of compute in our tool, so they can kind of mark those spaces as 'hot spots,'" he said.

Sinha says the app should be available in about a month.
