SIU ENROLLMENT

CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) will not hold a commencement ceremony in May.

SIUC made the announcement Thursday.

"As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, it is has become clear that it is not possible to hold a traditional, in-person commencement ceremony in May. We make this decision with regret because we know that commencement is the highlight of the college experience for students and families. It is a celebration of our students accomplishments, and it is a day of pride for the university. But we must be responsible in the face of the uncertain timeline for COVID-19 and important restrictions of large gatherings," said Chancellor John Dunn in a message to students and staff.

SIUC says students who are qualified will still graduate, and degrees will be mailed as usual. Refunds will be available for those who have already rented caps and gowns.

In addition to the decision on graduation, the university also issued updates on housing and student workers.

SIUC says all students with campus jobs will be paid through the end of the spring semester "regardless of whether their jobs are no longer needed due to a closure of a service or they are not returning to campus."

More information on the plan is expected in the next few days.

"We know our students depend on their campus jobs and we believe that it is important that we continue to support them during this unprecedented time," said the message.
