Wet masks from winter weather could spread germs

(WSIL) -- The cold air can sometimes make our noses runny, but that can cause some issues when protecting yourself against COVID-19.

Doctors say a wet mask poses a chance to spread bacteria and viruses.

If you have to go outside and it gets too damp, they say to change your mask as soon as you can.

The Harrisburg Medical Center tells News 3 to remember to have extra masks on hand.

"It's just a good idea to change them out on a regular basis. In the healthcare field, they don't want us to wear them more than a day. Some of the masks are washable so if you have the ability to have a bunch of them, you can just change them out on a regular basis and wash them when the time comes. So anything to keep down the germ count is important," said Harrisburg Medical Center Chief Medical Officer James Alexander

For winter time, wearing your scarf, ski mask or balaclava over your mask.
