SPRINGFIELD, Ill., (WSIL) -- The date of October 10th has a new meeting in the state of Illinois starting this year. Governor JB Pritzker has named October 10 at "National Black Brewers Day" across the state.
In a state known for brewing some amazing craft beer, a staggering statistic came to light. According to the director of Illinois Craft Brewers Guild, Ray Stout, only 1-percent of breweries are black owned. Stout said, this recognition is a step in the right direction.
The recognition came earlier in the month, in collaboration with the Illinois Craft Brewers Guild and National Black Brewers Association, was the first statewide celebration of its kind. It was also the successful introduction of nationally recognizing October 10 as Black Brewer's Day. Both groups came together for the recognition, and found it was an appropriate celebration for the history and contributions made to beer breweries by Black community.
Stout said the recognition is a powerful testament to their work within the industry, "honoring the contributions of Black brewers to our vibrant craft beer community and promoting diversity within the industry."
To continue to invest in diversity within the brewery community, the Illinois Craft Brewers Guild launched an annual scholarship, Illinois Diversity in Brewing Scholarship. The scholarship began in 2021 and is awarded to two people who are from historically underrepresented groups. The scholarship traditionally covers one of two courses offered by the Siebel Institute and the World Brewing Academy. The scholarship covers the cost of the full course. Organizers said, they hope the scholarship can help build a more inclusive and representative Illinois craft beer community.
