HERRIN (WSIL) -- RailCo representatives hosted a hiring event Thursday morning.

The company is expanding and seeking applicants to repair, maintain, and upgrade railcars. The company is also offering 2-year apprenticeships.

A new RailCo shop will be built in Herrin bringing at least 15 additional new jobs.

RailCo President Darrel Hoyt says this growth will create more economic opportunities.

"Within 100 miles of Herrin, we literally have owners who have 100,000 railcars. So our competitive advantage on repairing cars expeditiously and properly allows us to gain a real competitive advantage," he said.

Herrin Mayor Steve Frattini says he expects the new RailCo shop to open in the next 12 months.
