2 law enforcement officers shot in southeast Missouri

CARTER COUNTY, Mo. (WSIL) � Investigators now confirm the suspect has surrendered and is in police custody.

They’ve identified him as James D. Cummings of Van Buren, Missouri.

CARTER COUNTY, Mo. (WSIL) � Missouri State Highway Patrol Corporal Dallas Thompson tells News 3 the trooper shot Friday morning has been released from the hospital. The Carter County Sheriff’s Deputy remains in stable condition.

A SWAT team is now on scene and may use a robot to learn if it is safe to move closer to the suspect.

CARTER COUNTY, Mo. (WSIL) � The Missouri State Highway Patrol confirms one of its troopers and a Carter County sheriff’s deputy were shot while serving an eviction notice Friday morning.

It happened around 9:50 a.m.

There is still an active scene on Route M in Carter County and law officers are working to get the suspect to surrender.

The Highway Patrol spokesman tells News 3 both the deputy and the trooper have non-life threatening injuries. One was taken to a Poplar Bluff hospital. The other went to a facility in St. Louis.
