Biking across America: Cyclist over halfway to her goal

(WSIL) -- In July, Treva Inzerillo stopped for rest in Marion after a lengthy bike trip from the coasts of North Carolina. Now, she's much closer to her end goal.

Inzerillo is biking across the country to support veterans. The organization she rides for, , helps rehabilitate veterans, with a focus on women.

"I crossed the Missouri River several times, I've been in Nebraska, Iowa, I was in Kansas for a night. I've been following the Lewis and Clark Trail," said Inzerillo.

Recently she stopped in Bismark North Dakota, where she spent some time with a statue of Sacajawea.

"That was really inspiring. To think, I'm not the first person to do this, on a bicycle, or an adventurer."

There, she also had some issues with her bike.

"And a woman said, 'Hey! Do you need anything, do you need some cold water, do you need a place to stay, a hot meal?' And I said, 'Actually, I'm having trouble with my bike."

They packed up the bike and drove to her husband's place of work. "Which was 701 Cycle in Bismark, where they fixed the bike."

Besides mechanical problems, she's also had her fair share of weather delays. One storm caught her in the middle of nowhere, without shelter.

"I came across a tractor, a huge tractor, and I thought, I wonder, if that cab might be open, so I tried the door and it was, so I grabbed my backpack, and I jumped in, and I changed my clothes in someone's tractor. Then made sure to wipe everything down, and try to leave it a little nicer than I found it."

But for now, she's taking a much needed break from the road.

"It's my birthday, so I'm taking a day off, and after I turn 56, I'm going to get on my bike tomorrow morning, and head toward Glenn Dive, I think it is, Montana."

Inzerillo says she still has about 1,300 miles to go, before she dips her front tire in the Pacific Ocean.
