CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (WSIL)â€ Social media marketplaces have made buying and selling items more convenient.Â
Interactions in exchanging goods could pose a risk for people if not in a secure area.Â
To help combat the issue, the Cape Girardeau Police Department created a "Safe Exchange Zone".Â
The area is a designated spot for exchanging goods or having supervised interaction.Â
The police department says the area is monitored 24/7 with security camera footage.Â
Police say they will not intervene in interactions unless a crime is committed. Â
If you do plan on meeting someone for an exchange, the police department has a few reminders:Â
Do not give out sensitive information
Never go alone
Notify a family member or friendÂ
Disable all location services on your devices
Never meet at your homeÂ
