Carbondale restaurant says tariffs have caused supply shortage

New Kahala seeing impacts on ingredients due to tariffs

CARBONDALE, Ill. (WSIL) New Kahala, a well-known local Chinese restaurant, says they are feeling the impacts of tariffs.

The owners took to social media to inform customers that they've experienced shortages on certain ingredients over the past few weeks due to tariffs that were imposed.

The restaurant says that due to this, prices have doubled/tripled.

New Kahala says they've used a signature soy sauce for over 30 years that they're having trouble getting more supplies of. The restaurant says they used over 12 cases weekly, but have now been given purchase limits by suppliers.

This affects well-known meals like their fried rice.

They warned that customers might see a variation in flavor due to the alternative ingredients they have to use.

In the social media post, New Kahala says, "As small business owners, we are great at pivoting, but this one leaves us a little lost. Please be understanding and patient, and know that our commitment to our food is a priority, and we are doing everything we can to maintain the flavors that you all expect from us."
