CAIRO (WSIL) -- The holidays can be stressful if you don't know where your meal is coming from. That's why Comptroller Susana Mendoza's office traveled to Cairo Thursday.
The Comptroller's office distributed 160 turkeys and canned goods to those identified as 'in need.'
"This donation means there's still charity in the world," said resident Derek Eurales. "It means that whenever you need something, it's good for people to have a place to go and get food from."
This was the fourth year the office has distributed meals in Cairo.
"They've found that this is something they can count on each year to make sure they are getting access to those basic needs that they need. And that it's something that takes a little bit of stress off of them especially during the holidays," said Arrowleaf CEO Sherrie Crabb.
The Comptroller's office says Mendoza has a love for southern Illinois and wants to help.
"The Comptroller, she loves all the people of Illinois, all the communities equally, but especially southern Illinois where she comes and spends some time," said Outreach Coordinator for the Comptroller, Josh Downs.
The meals, including boxes of doughnuts, were made possible by donations from a Chicago credit union, Miles Brothers Foods, Laborers Local 773, and Krispy Kreme.
