CARTERVILLE (WSIL) -- Ameren Illinois is warning its customers of a phone scam in the region.

The utility company says someone pretending to be with Ameren is calling businesses demanding immediate payment and threatening to disconnect services.

A spokesperson for Ameren Illinois says the company has been notified of "an influx in scam calls in the Carbondale/Marion area."

"Definitely do not give out any kind of personal information, Social Security numbers, any kind of account information, banking information, anything like that over the phone. Because you never really know who you're speaking with," explains Tina Gibbs, community relations coordinator with Ameren Illinois.

If you receive one of these calls and have questions about your service, Ameren Illinois says to hang up and dial their office at (800) 755-5000.
